Klonaridis - Fix park is an important green space with a long history in the heart of a very dense neighborhood. Occupying an area of 7.500 m2, in a densely populated area of the city, Klonaridis –Fix Park is an important green lung of Athens, located in a marginal area where different cultures live and work.

The new proposal based on natural processes and principles of sustainable design aims to create a green space that signifies the value of exploration for the visitor andraises environmental awareness. The new design, includes a plant palette with Mediterranean species that create a vigorous understorey with low maintenance and irrigation needs, long life expectancy and permanent aesthetic and environmental interest. The proposed newplanting mixtures create the intermediate vegetation zone that is completely missing,while at the same time, they emphasize the original linear design of the park andcreate a new identity for the park with multiple environmental, cultural and aesthetic benefits. New understorey vegetation, irrigation system, urban equipment and latest-technology lighting has been installed. 

The renovated park includes 5 distinct sections, in which the visitors can stroll and simultaneously be educated and become aware of issues conserning nature and the environment. In the center of the park was created a sensory garden which includes plants with different colors, texture and flowers with a great botanical and seasonal interest. At the south side a biodiversity garden was established with evergreen mediterannean shrubs and aquatics around the fountain. The west and east alleys planted with Platanus trees are highlighted with linear vegetations of perennial mixtures and creeping plants wilst at the east side facing Patission str. all lawn area has been completely restored in order to host all types of outdoor activites.

The new design was implemented through innovative use of nature – based solutions (reduction of irrigation needs, use ofmixtures with flowering perennials, aromatic shrubs and ornamental grasses that enhance biodiversity, etc) in order to create a sustainable urban environment for the citizens of Athens.
